Anything you did on the mic was okay as long as you rhymed and stayed on beat. Let me make this as crystal clear as I possibly can because I’m seriously tired as fuck of people saying this dumb shit and using this false equivalency That was back when the art form was brand spanking new. Now Pain 1’s point is that the older rap didn’t have to have really skillful artistic wordplay and rhyme structure in every bar, so rap today shouldn’t be obligated to either. The very first thing he did that tipped off my bullshit meter was take a point that The Team Backpack video makes about punchlines and rhyme schemes and their effect on crowds and proceeds to make a comparison with a video of some super old-school 70’s rap with a guy doing a live show spitting what was at that time the nonstop party-rockin’ hotness. That being said, your boy Pain 1 articulates well but doesn’t fully make his point, and I’ll proceed to explain why right now. I think my position is easily ascertained due to a few previous entries, two in particular being about the subjects of objective skill, and the industry’s drive to flood the market with substandard music, respectively. The rebuttal video that I came across was made by someone named DJ Pain 1, who I know nothing about other than the fact that as he states in the video, he is a fan of Lil’ Yachty, Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug. One video (The Idiocy of Mumble Rap) came from Team Backpack, an organization known for highlighting MC’s with a great deal of objective lyrical skill, usually delivered by way of videos featuring ciphers and punchline heavy verses with a focus on wordplay. So recently two videos have surfaced debating the merits of so-called “Mumble Rap” and the value or lack thereof of the rappers who are purveyors of it. “Don’t push what I do off to the side just because it’s different and say it ain’t Hip Hop”- Nelly “Wack: weak, of poor quality”- Malibu’s Most Wanted
